Ten Ideas for Earth Day Resolutions

Ten ideas for your Earth Day ResolutionTen ideas for your Earth Day Resolution

As we all know by know, the Earth is struggling. We have used and abused our planet for generations and it’s showing the wear and we have been at a crisis point for some time.

It can be easy to forget the the Earth is in crisis on beautiful blue-sky, sunny days, or crisp, colourful autumn mornings, but the truth is unavoidable. Big change needs to happen … but big change starts with helping the smallest people on the planet understand the issue and build good Earth-friendly habits into their life from an early age.

On April 22, Earth Day, many people participate in some type of activity to acknowledge the value of our planet however I think it’s time we all start adding an Earth Day Resolution to this day. It could be a small thing that happens every day or a big effort that happens a few times a year. Make it a family activity and you’ll have everyone working to stay accountable.

What is one thing you can do to be more gentle on our planet going forward? What is something you can add to your daily life, or once a month, that will truly make a difference?

Here are some ideas to get started:

  1. Finally quit those plastic bags. Keep reusable ones in the car to be sure they’re always on hand.

  2. Plan to bike, walk or bus to work/school day once a month.

  3. Plant a vegetable garden to cut down on the Farm to Table travel time.

  4. Conduct a monthly litter clean-up or scavenger hunt on your street or at your local playground or park.

  5. Get some cool reusable water bottles and get into the habit of bringing them along on outings and to work or school.

  6. Challenge your kids to reuse items around the house (bottle caps, toilet roll tubes, paper scraps) for their crafting.

  7. Talk a family walk or bike ride instead of a family drive on the weekend.

  8. If you haven’t already, take the time to figure out the right way to recycle in our city and set up a system to make it easy for everyone to follow going forward.

  9. Make a commitment to turn off lights and unplug appliances when not in use. The more you do it, the more it will become a habit.

  10. Commit to a litter free lunch at least once a week. Get reusable containers, have the plastic bags brought back home to be rinsed and reused, etc.
