We have never been to Monster Jam.
If you’ve been following along on here, even for a minute, you’ll likely know that my four year old son is obsessed, no, wait, OBSESSED, with anything with wheels. This started before he was even one year old, despite having a big sis who was super into fairies and princesses, he always gravitated towards the vehicles. But, somehow, we have never made it to Monster Jam.
This year the kind folks putting on the event invited us to attend and we are SO EXCITED. My son has been watching YouTube videos of all the trucks who will be there and is particularly excited to see Grave Digger. My daughter is just as excited as him but her favourite is Monster Mutt. She loves that it’s a woman driving the Monster Truck – girl power for the win!
And, as if that wasn’t exciting enough, they’re also partnering with us to GIVEAWAY a pack of four tickets to the Saturday show at 1:00 p.m.!!! Read on for details on how to enter…
We asked around and here for what we should know before we go and here are the six top tips we heard over and over.
1. BRING EAR PROTECTION
Those trucks are LOUD! And little kids’ ears are sensitive. Heck, MY ears are sensitive! We’ve ordered these Baby Banz ear protection headphones for the kids (affiliate link) because they received the best overall reviews for comfort and effectiveness (plus they look super cool). My husband and I will be getting some good quality wax ear plugs. They do sell headphones at the venue, while supplies, last, in case you aren’t sure but you should probably just assume you’ll need them and plan ahead to protect your children’s (and your own) hearing!
2. BE AWARE OF THE WEATHER
Scotia Speedworld is an outdoor venue so dress accordingly – if it’s chilly it’s better to have too many layers than not enough, and if it’s sunny, don’t forget the hats, sunglasses, and lots of sunscreeen just in case. The show goes rain or shine so come prepared to embrace the weather and have fun!
3. SHOW AND TICKET DETAILS
Saturday, July 7 has shows at 1 pm and 7 pm; Sunday, July 8 has one show at 1 pm. Each show is about two hours plus intermission. There is no assigned seating but from what I’ve heard there aren’t really any bad seats – these trucks are so big you can get a good view of them from any spot! Tickets are $29 each, including taxes (plus a $2 online ordering fee). All kids ages two and older require their own ticket. Tickets can be purchased online here.
4. PIT PARTIES FOR THE SUPERFAN
Pit Parties are held before the main event at 10:30 am and are a separate ticket ($16.50 per person) but there are only TWO time options (the evening show doesn’t have a pit party). You get to meet and collect autographs from your favourite drivers, and get your photo taken in front of your favourite trucks. How COOL is that?? It would be fun to go each year and measure the kids’ growth by how tall they are compared to the truck!
There is free parking at the venue, but be prepared to wait awhile when you leave as everyone will be leaving at the same time! Pack some books, toy monster trucks, and snacks to keep the little ones entertained while you wait to get out of the lot. You could also park at the back end of the lot closest to the road, meaning a longer walk in and out, but a shorter wait in the car (i.e. are you wearing your Fitbit and want those extra steps or not?).
6. VENUE AMENITIES & LOCATION
Monster Jam is held at Scotia Speedworld, near the Atlantic Canada Aviation Museum and the airport, at 150 Sky Blvd in Halifax. There is a snack bar, souvenir stand, as well as restrooms at the venue. Fun fact: You can also camp for free on the premises (no services though). Do note that there is ongoing construction this summer around the area so plan for that in your travel time (or, you know, just camp there the night before!).
