If you’ve had a baby while living in Halifax chances are you’ve met one, or all, of the members of the Swain family while preparing for the baby or connecting with other parents after the baby was born. Jolyn and Eric own the charming shop, Nurtured Products for Parenting, on Agricola Street in the North End of Halifax.
Their family, which also includes twelve-year-old Sam, seven-year-old Malcolm, Hunter the cat, and Larry the fish, live on the peninsula in central Halifax. Eric is a born and bred Nova Scotia boy but Jolyn grew up in Michigan. The couple met here originally and then moved to Calgary, but always knew they’d be coming back to raise a family here.
When choosing where in Halifax they wanted their children to grow up, they put quite a bit of thought into what part of the city would be best for their lifestyle. When they first moved back from Calgary they chose to rent a couple of homes on the peninsula before they settled on buying a home in central Halifax. They loved the convenience to everything and ease of getting around on foot, bus, bike, or car.
“I can walk to work, my kids can walk to school, we can meet up at the Oval plus arrive anywhere…in about five minutes,” says Jolyn.
She explains that because everything is so central to their home they rarely run into issues with fitting in the kids’ activities, running a business, and taking in all of the fun events happening nearly every weekend downtown.
“Halifax has an enchanting small town feel in a city that seems as if it is growing and begging you to explore it every day,” Jolyn says.
And explore they do! On top of running their shop, they still find time to be active citizens and participate in many local festivals such as the Lantern Festival, SWITCH, Open Doors and Open City (even negotiating into the store lease that they can host a petting zoo during the Open City event!).
When exploring off the peninsula the Swain family head to the beach. As Jolyn grew up next to the Great Lakes and Eric grew up here, their desire to be near water is in their DNA, like many other Haligonians.
“That time spent on or near the beach is by far what we long for our kids to experience. Growing up near the water gave us both a true respect for the earth,” says Jolyn.
Martinique Beach is a family favourite and they also love sea glass hunting, playing with the snails at low tide, whale watching, touring lighthouses, and visiting the sand castle competition at Clam Harbour Beach.
Back in the city, the family has fun cycling around town and along the waterfront, enjoying picnics at the Dingle, fishing on Chocolate Lake, travelling through time at the Citadel, hanging out at some favourite playgrounds like Ardmore, Needham, Isleville and the Commons, and exploring the neverending twists and turns of the trails in Point Pleasant Park.
The friendly people are what drew Jolyn and Eric back to Halifax originally and those are some of the traits they are instilling in their two growing Haligonian children. They exhibit this attitude every day, whether it be to a customer in their shop or a tourist needing directions to the Public Gardens.
“The vibrancy that exists here is catchy,” says Jolyn. “I’m proud to be a part of that generous dose of Maritime hospitality.”
