It wasn’t just a stroke of luck that the Stevens family (parents Anitra and Jeff, seven-year-old daughter Jorja, and their Shih Tzu Zoie) ended up living in Spryfield. When they started looking for a new home, they spent a lot of time checking out all of the neighbourhoods in the Halifax region before finding the perfect one for their family.
“I was researching communities and was drawn to the craftsman style of the houses in Kidston Estates,” Anitra says. “It was closer to our new jobs and we had friends living in the same community who encouraged to have a look when we were on the house hunt. They also told us it was a neighbourhood full of young families and we loved that.”
Anitra, the executive director at Athletics Nova Scotia, and Jeff, a buyer for Sysco Foods were both raised in Nova Scotia.
Anitra grew up in Brooklyn, NS and Jeff grew up in Beaverbank, NS. Anitra has lived all over Nova Scotia and even moved away to Calgary, Maine, and Florida, but Halifax kept calling her back home.
“Being a Haligonian is enjoying the benefits of a small east coast city while also knowing your neighbours and making lifelong friendships; and being close to ocean and nature makes easy to get out of the city and explore,” she says. “We love adventure and travelling in our own backyard and away.”
The Stevens family can usually be found hiking through their favourite places which include Long Lake Provincial Park, York Redoubt, the Frog Pond by the Dingle, and Crystal Crescent Beach.
Changing seasons don’t stop their outdoor fun, in the winter you’ll find them on snowshoes or skis, and in the summer they’ll be toting their picnic basket.
Outside of the city they name Howard Dill’s pumpkin farm, Martock, the Annapolis Valley wineries, and the stunning South Shore beaches (near where Anitra grew up) as some of their favourite day trip destinations.
They have been living in Kidston Estates, near the Rockingstone Beach and Park, for five years now and say the people of Spryfield was what ultimately made them choose to settle there when their daughter was a toddler.
“We only have one child so we were looking for a tight knit community where she had lots of kids to play with and always a kid or two stopping by to play. We got our wish,” says Anitra.
“We both spent our nights out playing until the street lights came on and felt very safe. We feel the same way about Kidston. Our daughter is already out on her bike exploring the neighbourhood and playing with friends…it’s exactly what we wanted.”
Anitra says that everyone in the community is quick to help each other out however they can, from clearing driveways to picking up someone’s child from school if they’re running late. Neighbours have become friends and regularly planned, and even impromptu, gatherings are par for the course.
“We value our lifelong friendships and cherish our new friends that we have made since moving to Spryfield.”

Paula’s Tip: When buying a home consider your needs and wants within your home price purchase range. Think about your current lifestyle, as well as any lifestyle changes you foresee longer term. Choose neighbourhoods in close proximity to the amenities that are most important to you, like schools, shopping, entertainment, recreation, public transportation, and commute times. Determine the size of home you require as well as features that are most important to you such as extra storage, more bathrooms or a large yard.
